About ELTS (Eglish Language and Thinking Skills)
English Language and Thinking Skills: Reading and Vocabulary is a series of six books. The key features are:
- Thematic vocabulary development
- Learning through thinking skills
- Vocabulary usage through different activities
Vocabulary development is most effective when it occurs in meaningful contexts. Hence, each unit is designed around a theme and each section within the unit provides a meaningful context. The themes and vocabulary are appropriate for students at particular levels.
Effective learning of vocabulary needs to go beyond word recognition. The ELTS approach emphasizes the use of thinking skills for effective learning. Students learn to identiry, match, infer or classify the vocabulary acquired and in doing so they reinforce their understanding.
Vocabulary usage is facilitated when students use the vocabulary acquired in activities such as grammar, comprehension and writing. Different text types such as menus, notices and puzzles provide opportunities for students to use vocabulary in a creative, flexible and effective manner.
As a result, each unit of the book is organized according to the following sections:
Reading: a passage is given as the meaningful context to facilitate the exposure to and acquisition of new vocabulary
- Spelling : reinforces the acquisition of new vocabulary while equipping students with the ability to recognize the words and use them in their writing subsequently
- Grammar : reinforces understanding of and provides practice for a particular grammar item encountered in the reading passage
- Exploration : facilitates mastery of critical thinking skills
- Comprehension : evaluates students’ acquisition of the new vocabulary in their overall understanding of a given passage.
- Writing project : provides opportunities to use the acquired new vocabulary in a creative manner.
Accompanying each book is a teacher’s manual with suggestions of teaching strategies for each section. Nothing is more pleasurably satisfying than when teachers and students alike find this book fun, friendly and beneficial to them.
